What Is an NFC Google Review Card and How Does It Work?

An NFC Google Review Card is a small card with a chip inside that holds a link to your Google review page. When a customer holds their phone against it, the review page opens straight away. There is no app to install, no QR code to scan and nothing to type.

What does NFC mean?

NFC stands for near-field communication. It is the same technology behind tap-to-pay and many smartphone features. Modern iPhones and most Android phones can read NFC tags without any extra app.

How the tap works

  1. The chip stores your Google review link.
  2. The customer holds their phone near the card for a second.
  3. The phone recognises the tag and opens your review page.
  4. They choose a star rating and write a few words.

Does it need a battery or subscription?

No. The chip is powered by the phone’s own signal, so there is no battery to replace, and the link lives on the card itself, so there are no monthly fees.

Can you change the link later?

Yes. The card can be re-programmed with a free app such as NFC Tools, so if you move premises or change your profile you do not need a new card. See how to program an NFC card.

Who is it for?

Any business that serves customers in person: cafes, salons, tradies, clinics, gyms, retail and professional services. More examples are in our guides for cafes, tradies and salons.

Why not just share a link?

Links work, but they rely on the customer remembering and typing or tapping something later. A card puts the action in their hand while they are still happy with you.
